This is Gateshead Metro Station which is part of the Tyne & Wear
Metro system which now has 60 stations on it and is used by about
40 million people a year and covers about 48 miles of track.
The Metro alignment includes most of two of the world's oldest
passenger railways: the Newcastle & North Shields Railway
(Metro between Chillingham Road and North Shields) and the
Brandling Junction Railway (between Gateshead and
Monkwearmouth).
Both opened in 1839, making the Metro arguably one of the world's
oldest local rail transport systems.

The Tyne and Wear Metro was also the first railway in the UK to
operate using the metric system; all its speeds and distances are
measured in metric units only.

March 10, 2010 Haymarket Metro

The revamped Haymarket Metro Station which is really looking very swanky. It looks like a huge Bullseye !
Haymarket is Tyne and Wear Metro’s deepest underground station, and the second busiest on the 48-mile network, with more than six million passengers a year. After nearly 30 years’ use, the station has been refurbished below ground and the original circular surface building of 1980 has been replaced by an eye-catching four storey steel and glass building which provides better facilities for passengers and creates additional retail, leisure and office space on its upper floors. The two-year, £20 million redevelopment is the first stage in Metro’s £300 million modernisation programme led by Nexus, which owns and manages the entire system.

February 25, 2010 Pelaw Metro Station

Pelaw Metro Station by Night - pelaw sits at the point where the metro lines to South Shields and Sunderland meet up and is a busy exchange station. Pelaw itself is a suburb of Gateshead and was once renowned for its factories producing textiles, printing and furniture ... but to my knowledge there's never been a rice factory !!!

January 23, 2010 Monument Metro Station

If you've been to Newcastle and seen the monument to earl Grey but not ventured below - well this is what lies beneath - the entrance to the metro station curves round this circular wall which hides the foundations of the monument in the ticket hall.
